From data to actionable insight

What is business intelligence?

Business intelligence (BI) provides insights essential for making strategic decisions. BI tools such as Power BI analyze both historical and current data and present the results in visual formats.

How does Business Intelligence work?

Collect, structure, transform, visualize

Business intelligence goes through a four-step process to turn raw data into actionable insights for the entire organization. These steps -- from collecting and analyzing data to visualizing it and ultimately using it for decision-making -- help companies leverage data effectively. Where companies previously performed analyses manually, BI now offers advanced tools that automate this process, saving time and effort.

Step 1: Collect and transform data from various sources

BI tools use the ETL (extract, transform, load) technique to bring together both structured and unstructured data from various sources. This data is then processed and stored in a central location, where it can be accessed for further analysis and reporting as one comprehensive data set. This central place is called the Data Warehouse.

Step 2: Analyze patterns and anomalies in the data

Data mining allows BI solutions to quickly detect patterns and anomalies in large data sets. Through automated analytics, companies discover important trends and anomalies that provide insight into their organization's performance. BI tools support different types of analytics, such as exploratory, statistical and predictive analytics, which analyze trends and provide valuable recommendations.

Step 3: Visualize data for better interpretation

Visualizing data with BI helps present insights more clearly. Using interactive dashboards, graphs and maps, complex data can be displayed in an understandable way so that everyone in the organization is aware of what is going on. At Peacock, we use the Microsoft platform. Therefore, we generally implement Power BI.

Step 4: Respond directly to real-time insights

By analyzing a combination of real-time and historical data, your company reacts faster to changing circumstances. As a result, Business Intelligence enables you to make timely adjustments, make strategic decisions and optimize processes based on the most up-to-date information. This allows you to address inefficiencies, market fluctuations and other business-critical situations more quickly. The ultimate goal is to implement improvement across all departments and layers within the organization.
